Interpreting a trend

One of my favourite quotes from The Devil Wears Prada is Miranda's response to Andy's inability to distinguish between the two belts above. Andy refers to fashion as merely "stuff". Miranda replies as follows:

'This... stuff'? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff."

I find it really interesting to see how brands interpret runway trends. For example, the military inspired khaki look has shown recently at Balmain, Marc Jacobs and Isabel Marant.

THE INTERPRETATION...

I really think that the time lag between the "inspiration" and the "interpretation" is closing. High-end designers are showing more often, and placing a greater emphasis on the resort collections, as these generate the most cash flow. This results in more trends, more often.

Australian brands like Witchery and Country Road, and international brands like Topshop and Zara are expected to emulate the runway trends. I say "emulate" because I think there is a real difference between blatant copying and being inspired by a certain trend or look. Admittedly, the distinction between the two is sometimes difficult to identify.

The most recent Country Road season borrows heavily from the military trend, but adapted to the Country Road aesthetic. In my opinion that means a more polished take on military. Perhaps that is an oxymoron, but I'm sticking by it.

The Blues

Vintage cotton scarf from Mrs Peel's in Leura

Vintage cotton Oroton scarf (also from Mrs Peel's)

These cotton scarves were bought for me by my lovely Nana. I think that makes three trips to Mrs Peel's for us in the last year or two. Luckily I buy more at Mrs Peel's than at the Leura Lolly Shop!

Big Chloe and little Chloe

I have always found shopping for perfume daunting and on the whole, unenjoyable. There is too much choice, yet everything smells like flowers or vanilla.

So was very excited when I found Chloe, a classic scent that stays put most of the day. Only one or two sprays are required and it came with a little Chloe bag with miniature perfume and body lotion popped inside.

The perfume bottle and packaging remind me of this Chloe dress. Neutral, classic and clean. Its very powerful when all aspects of a brand are aligned like that. It makes me wonder what a Country Road perfume bottle would look like. Classic, obviously. But also with a natural or earthy scent. Perhaps like Marc Jacobs Rain or Grass fragrances.

I've always like the name Chloe, very French. And I've always wanted a name with an accent.

One little twilly

My little twilly came with a lot of friends.

Including a 130 page "magazine" complete with a recipe for Rhubarb Sorbet on page 98.

There are also a number of short short stories. Being a lawyer, my favourite was:

There once was a wily lawyer who bought a box or rare and expensive cigars. He had them comprehensively insured and, after smoking them, told the insurer that they had disappeared "in a series of small fires". There was no investigation.

Hermes orange.

The salesperson explained that twillys are the perfect length to wrap twice around the wrist and knot underneath.

Knotting cards explain how to tie each size Hermes scarf or twilly.

Not actually that exciting, but I needed an excuse to use this cute pic.

Madison hearts Mimco

The August edition of Madison comes with a free Mimco scarf and $30 Mimco gift voucher once you sign up to their online database.

Not bad for an $8.95 magazine. The spread entitled "The Great White Shirt" on page 139 is making me want grey ballet flats and the menswear inspired centre spread is excellent. Mmm tweed and waistcoats.

The Australian Way

Last September, a number of international Vogue magazines held the inaugural "Fashion's Night Out". There was MK and Ashley at Barneys, SJP at Oscar Della Renta and Daria Werbowy at Lancome. There was even special cup cakes at Magnolia Bakery in celebration.

This September 9, Vogue Australia is holding the first Australian Fashion's Night Out. I wonder if Cupcakes on Pitt will do a special cup cake to mark the occasion? I wonder if Melbournites are going to claim it should be held in the fashion capital? I wonder if I should be booking flights?

Booky wooks

I desperately need a new bookshelf. This one is so full its almost falling over and there are a couple of years worth of UK Vogue hiding in a cupboard upstairs. I wonder if its possible to carry an IKEA Expedit bookshelf onto the plane...
